Mary started Scottish Country dancing in January 1980, and became the first secretary of the Chapel Hill SCDS. She attended the first Thistle School in 1980, where she has since been on staff. She completed the first teacher training class at Thistle in 1982 and in 1986 went to Summer School in St. Andrews, Scotland, to obtain her full Teacher's Certificate, with tutor Dr. Alastair MacFadyen. She has continued to teach a weekly class in Greensboro since she began in 1982. Now retired from Moses Cone Hospital she has more time to travel with her musician husband, Pete Campbell, and for Scottish Country dancing.
Eilean came to the United States in 1976 with her husband, Mike and two daughters. She started Scottish country dancing in Shelby in 1984. Eilean received her Preliminary RSCDS Teaching certificate in 1989 with the Northern Virginia Branch. Two years later, she earned her full RSDCS Teaching accreditation at the RSCDS Summer School at St. Andrews. In 1994, Eilean was appointed Director of Scottish Country Dancing for the Loch Norman Highland Games held each April near Charlotte, North Carolina. Under her guidance, the Friday and Saturday Loch Norman dances have progressively increased in popularity. Since retirement from Girl Scouts, Eilean has taught workshops in New Orleans, Atlanta, Florida, Ohio and, since 2007, is a resident teacher at the week-long Thistle School at Banner Elk in the NC mountains and which precedes the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Following the 2008 retirement of Dr. Bernard Kaimann, Eilean was appointed Director of Scottish Country Dancing for the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. In 2006, Eilean was elected Chairman of the new Carolinas RSCDS Branch.
Brian has been a Scottish Country dancer and member of the RSCDS since 1990. He has previously served on the branch management committee as Vice Chair. He is a past member of the board of directors of the Scottish Cultural Organization of the Triangle (SCOT) and has served as President of the Raleigh Scottish Country Dancers. He is also the webmaster for the Carolinas Branch of the RSCDS
